Austro-Hungarian Navy submarines were also known as U-boats. The term is an anglicised version of the German word U-Boot ( listen), a shortening of Unterseeboot ('under-sea-boat'), though the German term refers to any submarine. German submarines also destroyed Brazilian merchant ships during World War II, causing Brazil to declare war on both Germany and Italy on 22 August 1942. The primary targets of the U-boat campaigns in both wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from Canada and other parts of the British Empire, and from the United States, to the United Kingdom and (during the Second World War) to the Soviet Union and the Allied territories in the Mediterranean. Although at times they were efficient fleet weapons against enemy naval warships, they were most effectively used in an economic warfare role ( commerce raiding) and enforcing a naval blockade against enemy shipping. U-boats were naval submarines operated by Germany, particularly in the First and Second World Wars. But the new convoy tactics, when combined with limited air support near the coasts, and an increase in Allied war vessels, allowed the all-important logistical lifeline to continue across the Atlantic and sustain the Allied war effort.U-995, a typical VIIC/41 U-boat on display at the Laboe Naval Memorial By the end of 1917, 3,170 Allied and neutral ships, totaling nearly six million tons, were sunk. The convoys were harder for U-Boats to find and attack, but the U-Boats still posed a terrifying threat. In response to the U-Boat attacks, Allied merchant ships sailed in groups, called convoys, escorted by warships. With hundreds of ships sunk over the first half of the year, the British Admiralty predicted the possible loss of the war on 20 June unless the U-Boat campaign was stopped. The Germans had gambled that unrestricted submarine warfare would win the war by strangling Britain before the full might of the United States would turn the tide. This new unrestricted submarine warfare campaign was partially responsible for bringing the United States into the war on the Allied side in April 1917. With no end to the war in early 1917, Germany returned to unrestricted submarine warfare on 1 February 1917, where its primary aim was to sink all vessels supplying the Allies, regardless of whether the country in question was at war with Germany. A year of intermittent attacks, combined with confusing, self-imposed rules by the German Admiralty on U-Boats that required them to surface when confronting large liners in order to determine nationality, proved cumbersome and dangerous to the U-Boats. U-Boat attacks intensified, although Germany still feared bringing the United States into the war. The neutral United States almost went to war over the incident, and the German high command ordered that U-Boats desist in attacking merchant ships with no warning, which came into effect in September 1915.īut this new cautious policy did not result in enough ships being sunk. On, the civilian ocean liner Lusitania was sunk, resulting in 1,198 deaths, including many Americans. But the war at sea soon lost its chivalrous nature. German U-Boats typically allowed the crews of the ships to disembark before the vessel was sunk, usually by deck gun fire instead of torpedoes, as U-Boats carried a limited number. In February 1915, German U-Boats began to attack all merchant vessels in British waters. It fell to the U-Boats to harass the Royal Navy, and the easier targets of merchant ships that were forced to cross the Atlantic. Even though the German navy sank more British warships than it lost at the Battle of Jutland (31 May to 1 June 1916), the Germans retreated back to their ports and were effectively bottled up there for the rest of the war. Germany had a powerful navy, but was cautious about losing it in a major naval engagement. Germany, blockaded by Britain’s superior navy, turned to submarines in an attempt to sever Britain’s naval lifeline across the Atlantic. German submarines, or U-Boats, threatened Canadian merchant ships carrying troops and supplies to Britain, whose war effort depended on this support. The defense has been incredibly inconsistent this season, but the issues have yet to show up here during March Madness. Purdue is loaded with offensive weapons, and it's yielded a second weekend in the NCAA Tournament. Despite scoring over 90 points in both tournament outings, North Carolina could stand to get more consistent play from Caleb Love, who scored 23 vs Marquette but could only muster up 5 points and 6 turnovers while fouling out against Baylor. The Tar Heels are red hot right now, and if their offense continues to play like it is right now, they'll be a very tough out for anyone they matchup against. 1 seed Baylor, while the powerful frontcourt court duo of Armando Bacot (16.5 PPG, 13.5 RPG in the tournament) and Brady Manek (27.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG in the tournament) did their thing. RJ Davis poured in 30 points in Carolina's upset win over No. North Carolina is proof that if you get good guard play, you can beat anyone in the NCAA Tournament. If they can get slightly better play against Duke, the defense will likely carry them to the title game. Tech ranks in the bottom third of the country in turnover percentage (20% of Texas Tech possessions result in a turnover) and three point shooting (32.2% from beyond the arc is 251st nationally). The only thing that's holding this team back is their guard play on the offensive end. They've given teams fits all year long with their "No-Middle" defense, and they've continued to wreak havoc in the postseason. What they haven't lacked is a strong starting five and a whole lot of intensity on the defensive end. The Red Raiders have lacked only one thing this season - a true point guard. The big three of Jared Bynum, Nate Watson, and Al Durham has carried the team to this point, but I'm curious to see if they're enough to get Providence past the Jayhawks. They'll need their offense to be next level against Kansas. The luckiest team in the nation (according to KenPom) has unsurprisingly made the Sweet Sixteen. What was once a fringe bubble team that "didn't deserve to be in the tournament" according to some has now turned into a Sweet Sixteen team. The Wolverines have been firing on all cylinders since Juwan Howard returned from suspension. JD Notae is going to need to shoot better in order for the Hogs to advance further than they have. If their offense isn't clicking, Gonzaga may give Arkansas fits. The Razorbacks outlasted Vermont before struggling against New Mexico State. Arkansas Razorbacks (27-8)ĭespite this being Arkansas' second Sweet Sixteen in consecutive seasons, something about this team concerns me. I don't see Miami making it past the Elite Eight, and to be honest their draw to get there has been extremely favorable. The Hurricanes pride themselves in being one of the most efficient offenses in the nation, but have played scrappy defense in the tournament and are riding a wave of momentum. Miami scraped by USC before throttling Auburn to advance. That’d be a computer you could leave running all the time and even access your media server remotely over the Internet. You could also set up a dedicated server system to run the server, of course. If you have a desktop PC or laptop and are happy just accessing the server while your computer is running, you can just install the server software on your desktop computer. You’ll also need to run your own home server for this. If you have a Chromecast, remember that you don’t need any special Plex or Media Browser app on your TV - you can install the appropriate app on your smartphone and then use it to cast media directly to your Chromecast. You can then install the appropriate apps on your TV-streaming boxes, smartphones, and tablets. Both Plex and Media Browser offer an optional account system, which can simplify signing into the mobile and TV apps and connecting to your server remotely over the Internet. Install the Plex or Media Browser on your system of choice and set it up to point at your media. The setup process should just take a few minutes, no matter what server you choose to use. Set Up the Server, Install the Apps, and Start Streaming So, you’ll need to pick one - or, better yet, consider trying both and figuring out which one works best for you. Media Browser and its apps are completely free, so there’s no monthly fee or per-app purchases you’ll have to deal with - then again, Media Browser doesn’t even offer PlayStation or Xbox support you could purchase if you wanted to. The iOS Plex app costs $5, and the Xbox and PlayStation app both require a “Plex Pass” subscription that will cost you $5 a month. Want to use it on a computer? There are also mobile apps for for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 8. Media Browser offers clients for the Roku and some other TV-streaming devices, including Chromecast support. There’s also a web interface and powerful Plex application for computers, if you hook up a computer to your TV. They offer mobile apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 8. Plex offers clients for the Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms - as well as Chromecast support. You can install it on a desktop computer, a dedicated server, or get a pre-made NAS device that supports the server software. Plex and Media Browser both offer servers that run on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, BSD, and various NAS devices. You could also try Kodi, formerly known as XBMC - it can be a bit more complicated to set up and works a bit differently. Both work similarly, offering a server you install on a desktop PC, laptop, NAS device, or dedicated home server. The two biggest solutions to recommend are probably Plex and Media Browser. If you have a large collection of local video and music files - perhaps videos ripped from DVDs and music ripped from audio CDs - this may be the ideal way to access that content on all your devices without relying on streaming services like Netflix and Spotify. There are some good free software packages for this, but you’ll need to bring your own media. RELATED: Why You Should Connect a PC to Your TV (Don't Worry It's Easy!) Now the term "meme" is more often used to refer to instant but transient success, something that is permanent only so far as countless news stories on the internet are permanent. Last year Richard Dawkins gave a talk on how his original concept behind memes no longer applied to modern usage of the term his point being that memes, in his original definition, are ideas that survive because they transmit culturally useful information. While it wouldn't be strictly accurate to call Goat Simulator a meme, its sudden prominence does owe everything to that kind of virality. This is a game where the screenshots are better than the experience, and comparisons being made to score-attack games like the Tony Hawk's series are ludicrous. Goat Simulator is a knowing piece of shonk, where the fact that the controls don't feel great and the physics are ludicrous is part of the appeal. It is important to emphasise that all of this stuff sounds better than, in practice, it feels. Through various means you can transform the goat into an alien, a robot, a giraffe, a whale, or – by dragging five humans onto a pentagram in a corner of the map – "Devil Goat". Jump over a fence towards the Zero-G testing facility and, as well as the legend "Fuck the police" being blazoned across the screen, your goat can float around therein. Happen upon a barbeque party and you can cause chaos by butting the participants, perhaps kidnapping one with your tongue and dragging them up a nearby scaffold. Butt a petrol station and, as in Goat Simulator's trailer, you can cause an explosion that sends our little friend careening across the map. You control a goat in thirdperson, and walk it through a small open-world area butting things from people to gas canisters. And while this is a funny joke for 10 minutes, it becomes a different thing when the game's on the front page of Steam for £7. The joke with Goat Simulator is that it's crap. While this is pretty funny, it also leads to the unedifying spectacle of everyone wanting to be in on the joke and outlets, without a trace of irony, awarding Goat Simulator the kind of decent scores and writeups that may tempt people towards a purchase. The phenomenon is about being part of the joke: look at Goat Simulator's user tags (a Steam feature that lets players assign words to games) and the top four are "Masterpiece", "Beautiful", "Art" and "Simulator". In fact there's a version of Flappy Bird called Flappy Goat. Most recently we've seen Flappy Bird and Twitch Plays Pokemon. Games are a fertile area for this kind of self-reflexive success. It is a parody both of gaming and of itself. The title of the game – which has been the subject of some frankly adorable confusion over at the Daily Mail – references the recent explosion in popularity of more straight-laced sims like Euro Truck Simulator and Farming Simulator. Goofy ah.Goat Simulator is and was a joke, the product of developer Coffee Stain studios entering a game jam and creating a knockaround sandbox that promises to fulfill all of your goat-based fantasies (not that one). Prasad, has the experience and expertise in treating several spine conditions through appropriate and effective spinal stabilization procedures. It takes around six months to fully recover from spinal stabilization surgery. Physical therapy will start in the first week after the surgery with walking and stretching followed by static stabilization exercises for the next two months. Limited activity is allowed and there should be no lifting, bending and twisting while the bones fuse together. However, there will be some pain over several months. How Long Does It Take to Recover from Spinal Stabilization Surgery? The pain will subside in four weeks after the procedure. Special implants are then placed to fuse two or more vertebrae together. Retractors help keep the space open during the procedure. A tabular dilator is used to access the spine between the muscles. A special X-ray guides the surgeon throughout the procedure. In the minimally invasive procedure, stabilization of the spine is performed through a small incision without damaging or cutting the surrounding muscles. Minimally Invasive Spine Stabilization Surgery Minimally invasive stabilization procedures offer a safe and effective treatment option for most spinal conditions. After this, a fusion is done in which the surgeon puts in irradiated cadaver bone secured with rods, screws, and plates that hold everything together till the time the patient’s bone and bone graft fuse together. Before inserting the hardware, your surgeon will remove the part of the spine that is pressing on the nerves. Spinal instrumentation is done along with decompression which is a minimally invasive procedure performed to take pressure off the spinal cord or nerve roots. Your surgeon will use hardware such as facet screws, percutaneous pedicle screws, and spinous process plates to fuse the backbones together. A common surgery involves instrumentation. What Happens in Spinal Stabilization Surgery Different surgical procedures are used to stabilize your spine. Stabilization of the spinal cord is a surgical procedure in which bone fragments are removed, and the alignment of the vertebrae is restored. What Is Spinal Cord Stabilization? Spinal cord stabilization involves surgical stabilization procedures that are used to treat acute spinal cord injuries. Spinal fractures from bone loss due to osteoporosis.Degenerative conditions such as scoliosis and herniated discs.Trauma due to falling from a high place, resulting in spinal compression, fractures, and other conditions.Trauma from an auto or sports-related injury. Why You Would Need Spinal Stabilization Surgery Spinal stabilization surgery is used to treat the following conditions: Spinal stabilization surgery involves inserting instruments such as screws and plates in the back of your spine to stabilize it and facilitate fusion after decompression. The degree of stabilization required depends on the severity of the problem and the assessment done by your surgeon. Spinal stabilization becomes necessary to treat a number of spine conditions. The study was published online in November 2018 in European Urology Focus. They also recommended further research on anxiety risk in this population. They added, “The findings are reassuring and provide a basis for a positive message in relation to future sexual life in counseling young men who undergo treatment for. “Our findings suggest that survivors in the present cohort were sufficiently treated with to avoid ,” the authors wrote. Scores on the fatigue assessment were similar for the three groups. Anxiety rates were 32%, 20%, and 26%, respectively. Rates were lower in the unilateral (18%) and TC + GCNIS (17%) groups. Ninety-five percent of the men in the bilateral group received testosterone replacement therapy, compared to 5% of the unilateral group and 51% of the TC + GCNIS group.Ībout a quarter of the men in the bilateral group had erectile dysfunction. The men completed questionnaires that assessed their erectile function, anxiety and depression symptoms, and fatigue. Overall, a median of 17 years had elapsed since the men’s cancer diagnosis. The remaining 2,260 men had been treated for unilateral testicular cancer and served as a comparison group. Ninety-three had had both testicles removed, and 126 had received contralateral (affecting the opposite testicle) radiotherapy for germ cell neoplasia in situ (TC + GCNIS). The study involved 2,479 testicular cancer survivors in Denmark. Men will also become infertile if both testicles are removed. But if both testicles are removed, the lack of testosterone can lead to sexual problems like low desire and erectile dysfunction (ED). Men who have one remaining testicle usually have normal sexual function afterward, as the testicle can still make enough testosterone and sperm on its own. Some men have one or both testicles surgically removed in a procedure called an orchiectomy. According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, about 2% of men with testicular cancer have the bilateral type. Select AMD Software and then click Uninstall. Bilateral cancer affects both testicles, either at once or at separate times. Unilateral cancer affects just one testicle. One way oncologists classify testicular cancer is by its location. The testes are responsible for producing sperm cells and male sex hormones like testosterone. Testicular cancer affects the testicles (or testes), two small glands located in the scrotum. A new study has examined sexual function and quality of life for survivors of bilateral testicular cancer. |
